Information at the meeting to assess the situation of rice exports in the first quarter of 2023 and the direction of rice export management in the coming time on the morning of April 26, Mr. Tran Quoc Toan, Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department said: According to customs statistics, in the first quarter of 2023, rice export turnover reached more than 1.85 million tons of rice with a value of US$981 million, an increase of more than 23% in volume and 34% in turnover compared to same period in 2022.

The average export price reached 529 USD/ton, an increase of nearly 9% compared to the same period in 2022. Notably, at many times in the months, the export price of 5% broken rice ranked first in the world, higher than that of the same period in 2022 price of rice of the same type of Thailand and India.

In the first quarter of 2023, good growth compared to the same period in 2022 was recorded in both traditional and potential markets. In particular, the value of rice exports to the EU recorded very good growth in many markets thanks to the export of fragrant rice products, high quality rice with high added value. This shows that the quality of Vietnam's rice is increasing, meeting the requirements of even fastidious markets, and at the same time shows the potential to expand the market and increase the market share of Vietnam's high-quality rice. Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan assessed that rice exports in the first quarter of 2023 continued to achieve many positive results, the structure of exported rice was in the right direction, increasing the export of Vietnamese rice varieties. has strengths such as fragrant rice, sticky rice, white rice, premium rice. and continued to record exports of organic rice, rice fortified with micronutrients bringing high value, reducing billions in exports of low quality ordinary rice.

Rice export markets in the first quarter of 2023 recorded good growth compared to the same period in 2022 in both traditional and potential markets. “Rice exports to Southeast Asian markets such as Indonesia and Singapore have grown strongly, exports to the EU also recorded a growth of nearly 50%, many markets increased sharply such as the Netherlands, Belgium, and Poland. Especially in traditional and key markets, we will continue to hold on like the Philippines and China," said the deputy minister.

Market continues to be favorable

Commenting on the rice export market in the coming time, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Nam - Chairman of the Vietnam Food Association predicted that in the last months of the year, food prices will continue to fluctuate due to climate change. , armed conflict ... causing countries to increase their food reserves.

According to Mr. Nam, currently, the demand for rice imports in Vietnam's traditional markets such as the Philippines, China, Indonesia and African countries has increased. In European countries, due to political conflicts between Russia and Ukraine, the demand for food reserves increased, which is a factor that helps rice exporters benefit in the near future.

While the demand for rice imports increases, the supply of rice from the world's leading rice exporting countries such as India and Pakistan continues to be limited; Thai rice prices increased due to the appreciation of the baht. Vietnam is having the advantage of early supply from the Winter-Spring crop, the output and quality of rice is stable, so it is forecasted that in the short term, Vietnam's rice price will still be at a good level.

“In general, in terms of the rice export market this year, the supply side is lower than the demand, so the output is favorable, the problem of the rice industry this year is the production stage and production linkage so that there are suitable rice varieties. with market demand”, emphasized Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Nam.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan said that although the market has many positive signals, in order to promote the growth of the rice industry, in the coming time, relevant associations, businesses and units will urgently review, There are recommendations for the Ministry of Industry and Trade to study and propose amendments to decrees on rice export business such as Decree 103, Decree 107/2018 to create a premise and remove difficulties for enterprises.

At the same time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to report to the Prime Minister for approval of the rice export strategy with a vision to 2030 so that businesses and localities can organize and implement synchronously.

In addition, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to coordinate with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in restructuring specific varieties, planting area codes to serve the rice import and export strategy, restructure export markets. export… to provide a better market.
