According to the annual Logistics and Supply Chain report, more than 11 billion tons of goods are transported each year by sea. Sea freight with the advantage of optimizing costs as well as transporting large quantities of goods compared to air transportation should be chosen by most businesses to use this service.
The strong development of sea transportation has led to more and more shipping lines developing accordingly to meet the increasing demand for cargo transportation of the market.
Here are the Top 10 largest shipping lines in the world (by capacity) compiled in order from low to high number of TEUs (according to statistics from Marinemonks.com in 2022)
1. MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION COMPANY – MSC
MSC is an international shipping company headquartered in Switzerland founded in 1970 operating in all ports around the world.
Over the past year, this shipping company has added more than 100 ships to its fleet, with a total volume of more than 645 ships with a capacity of about 4,287,473 TEUs by acquiring many old ships. MSC surpasses Maersk to become the world's largest shipping line in 2022.
2. MAERSK LINE
A.P Group. Moller-Maersk is a very early Danish-owned international business group (since 1904), commonly known as Maersk. There are currently more than 738 vessels with a capacity of about 4,275,542 TEUs (20 feet equivalent units), only a few thousand TEUs behind MSC.
3. CMA-CGM
CMA CGM France is a French shipping company founded in 1978. It is the 3rd largest shipping company in the world, with a fleet of more than 568 vessels operating on a shipping route between 420 ports in 150 different countries. The carrier's carrying capacity reached 3,198,217 TEUs.
4. COSCO
China Ocean Shipping Company also known as COSCO is one of the powerful ocean freight group. Compared to 2021, COSCO has moved back one rank and ranked fourth in the world's largest shipping lines. With a capacity of about 2,932,799 TEUs, COSCO has about 480 container ships operating in 40 countries.
5. HAPAG-LLOYD
Hapag-Lloyd AG is a German international shipping and container shipping company. Hapag-Lloyd was formed in 1970 through the merger of Hamburg-American Line and North German Lloyd.
This shipping line has a cargo capacity of about 1,743,983 TEU containers with a fleet of 250 ships.
6. OCEAN NETWORK EXPRESS (ONE)
Ocean Network Express Alliance is a Japanese shipping and container shipping company jointly owned by Japanese shipping lines Nippon Yusen Kaisha, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and K Lines. Established in 2007 in Japan and headquartered in Singapore. This shipping line has a fleet of 209 vessels with a capacity of about 1,531,530, to serve the strengthening of Asia, America, Latin and Africa routes. But in 2021, this shipping line has reduced TEU by 2% due to the decrease in the number of chartered vessels.
7. EVERGREEN
Evergreen Marine Corporation is a shipping and container shipping company headquartered in Luzhu District, Taoyuan, Taiwan, established in 1968 by Dr. Yung-Fa Chang.
This shipping line has a container capacity of about 1,477,644 TEUs and has more than 204 container ships with offices around the world.
8. HMM (HYUNDAI MERCHANT MARINE)
HMM Co., Ltd., formerly known as Hyundai Merchant Marine. As a shipping and container shipping company that holds a large market share in Korea's merchandise exports. HMM also plays an important role in the economic development of Korea.
The cargo capacity of this shipping line is about 819,790 TEUs with a fleet of about 75 ships.
9. YANG MING
Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation is a Taiwanese container shipping company established in 1972, headquartered in Keelung, Taiwan. The scope of operations of Yang Ming's fleet stretches across Asia, America, and Europe.
Yang Ming currently has a container capacity of about 6,62,047 TEUs with a fleet of about 90 vessels.
10. ZIM
Founded in 1945, ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd., commonly known as ZIM, is an Israeli international freight company. ZIM has grown to become a leading global freight forwarder.
In 2021, this shipping line added about 30 ships. Currently ZIM has a carrying capacity of about 4,19,064 TEUs with a fleet of 11 vessels.
